Glock 42 Review: A Good Self Defense Pistol?
Austrian gunmaker Glock has treated its pistol line like a tree, with the original Glock 17 9mm pistol carried in every major pistol caliber. The company will typically introduce a full-size Glock in a new caliber, then quickly follow with compact, subcompact, and compact pistols to round out the caliber offering.
Unlike other branches, such as the .45 ACP and .40 Smith & Wesson, the .380 ACP branch of the Glock tree is the smallest of all pistols: the Glock 42. The smallest and most powerful of them all. makes it suitable for design.
The .380 ACP round was invented in 1908 by inventor John Moses Browning. The early 1900s was perhaps Browning's most productive and influential period, with the invention of the M1911 rifle, the M2 .50 caliber machine gun, and the .380 ACP and .45 ACP calibers. Although it had short-lived success as a handgun in European armies before World War II, after the war standardized on the larger and more powerful 9mm Parabellum, it was a smaller round in military service and became a civilian caliber.
The .380 ACP is a subsonic round, with a few exceptions. Most reps are between 75 and 95 grains. The Federal .380 ACP full metal jacket round weighs 95 grains, hits the muzzle at 203 foot pounds and travels at 980 feet per second. By comparison, a Federal 9-millimeter (.350) FMJ round of roughly the same size packs sixty percent more energy at 364 pounds and travels at 1,150 feet per second.

The advantage of the .380 ACP is not power or velocity, but lighter weight. A .380 pistol, all things being equal, should have an easier time putting a bullet on target than a 9mm pistol. So the trade-off between the two calibers is: accuracy vs. damage. Accuracy Placing a round anywhere you want will damage you, but the damage will not give you accuracy.
Hence the argument for a pistol like the Glock 42. While not as powerful as its cousin, the Glock 26 9mm is more compact than the Glock 42. Although the .380 caliber is somewhat underpowered, it has over a century of load development and is capable of reaching 294 feet with Buffalo Bore+P rounds.
The Glock 42 is the smallest pistol in the Glock line with an overall length of 5.94 inches. The G.42 also has the shortest barrel length of any pistol, at just 3.25 inches. It is the only Glock to break the one-inch wide barrier at just 0.98 inches wide.
Glock's .380 offering is also the lightest of the company's guns to date. Weighing only 13.76 ounces, light revolvers like the Ruger LCR. The next heaviest pistol in the Glock line is the Glock 43 with a 9mm stack, which weighs seventeen ounces unloaded. Even a Glock 42 loaded with six rounds of .380 ammo is two ounces lighter than a Glock 43.

Most of the time I wear a suit and can carry mine in my Uncle Mike's pocket, the inside breast pocket of my suit, or in a Vedder IWB clip (attached) without anyone noticing.
This weapon has very low damage. My kids ages 9-12 shoot it at the range with me and have no problem shooting it. My oldest shoots the G26 and G23/G19 (I have a barrel conversion...thanks!) and likes to shoot the G42 because of the lower barrel.
I don't like the trigger on this one so I get a 3.5 pound connector to ease the long pull with a hard break. Maybe it's the size and weight of the gun, but the trigger seems to pull longer and it's harder to come off the rest.
This is my first Glock purchase and I have no regrets! A friend recommended me. He said he should get the 42 or 43. I chose the 42 for compactness and ease of concealment. I hope to get 43 in the end. I traded a Taurus 738 for this gun. There were many problems with traffic jams. You won't have that problem with a Glock. Looking forward to doing some rounds in between.

PLUS it's fun to shoot. If they have the Ruger LC9, as my son has a G43, it's a "stingy" way for my wrist and thumb (arthritis and badly healed thumb)...no need to go for the finger (G26)...more the best of both worlds for me. Small, light, easy to shoot (accurate!), very effective with "correct" bullets (I like the Lehigh Xtreme Defender)..reliable, typical Glock quality...excellent!
Newbie and I want to shoot. Glock 19 is my original, bought in 2014, clean, etc. I'm learning to learn. It's been mostly used for the last 4 weeks and since I signed up for my concealed weapons permit I'd like to pass the shooting part as well. It should be easy. But as the class got closer, I realized I didn't want to carry most of the gun. I love my Glock baby! It's great, but don't let the "cut" fool you! Yellow is filling a wall! No noticeable loss to me, but the shot is a bit surprising as there is very little armor to absorb the firecrackers! I'm sure I'll learn, but I'm using a Glock 19 for test shooting. Until 2014, LOLPrior, Glock hadn't released a new pistol design since the turn of the century. We've had some older Glock models reworked for new calibers and updated Gen 4 Glocks, but the last pistol produced by the Austrian company that could truly be considered a new design was the single-stack .45 ACP Glock 36 in 2000 .

Well, nearly a year later, every blogger, magazine writer, and YouTube channel in the gun world has thrown in their two cents on the Glock 42. The initial reaction has finally cooled and the shooting community has had a chance to evaluate the Glock 42 for what it is, not what we hoped it would be.
There is nothing new to rehash the specs and features of this pistol at this point, so I will save the usual review descriptions for the end and get down to the Glock 42.
My first experience with the new Glock was last January at the SHOT Show. I was allowed to read an entire magazine from the demo gun, which doesn't take much to impress the first time. But the Glock 42 SHOT Show mini review was enough for me to get a very clear picture of what Glock is aiming for. Instead of making the smallest .380 ACP on the market, it looks like Glock decided to make one that would be easier to shoot.
Back in September, I actually received a Glock 42 for review, and with more than 500 rounds fired since then, first impressions from the SHOT Show haven't really changed. It's much bigger than an ultra-compact pocket. It is the .380 pistol that has become so popular in recent years, but it is probably the smallest and lightest center pistol in my opinion.
